Skip navigation! Story from Spirit. By now, you’ve probably heard about Netflix’s new reality show, Indian Matchmaking. The series follows Sima Taparia, Mumbai’s top matchmaker, as she tries to find lifelong partners for her clients in both India and the United States. She says that there are many factors when deciding who’s going to make a good match for who, but there’s one piece that plays a significant part during the matchmaking process that may surprise you — and that’s how well the match’s horoscopes align. In Indian culture, this is called Kundali Matching, and it’s vital to decide whether or not a partnership will be a success. It’s an elaborate matching system, she explains, and there are Indian Vedic astrologers who specialize entirely in horoscope matching.

The cultural importance of Chinese astrology on people’s lives and destinies is pretty big. While not everyone believes that their life outcomes are determined by the years they were born, it’s pretty natural for people anywhere to fall back on superstitions…just in case. For example, if your zodiac sign is the dragon, then you might secretly expect great things to happen during the next year of the dragon.

And if doesn’t go so great, people will visit a fortune teller to find out how they can change their luck. The same goes for relationships and love. Fortune tellers will tell you there are different levels of compatibility between signs. It’s the same as saying a Libra is compatible with a Gemini or Leo.

Some zodiac signs just have a natural affinity with other zodiac signs. We’ll keep things simple and give you a partial list of highly compatible and hardly-compatible signs according to the Chinese zodiac. Of course, these are just astrological guidelines—you might find you and a romantic interest are better off as friends even if your signs match, or you might end up mortal enemies with nothing in common.

What to Read After Bingeing “Indian Matchmaking” on Netflix

As a young student in America a few years back, I would frequently meet inquisitive foreigners, intrigued by the unique socio-cultural practices in India. From food to films and family, there was much about the Indian social and cultural landscape that was of interest to the average American. Undoubtedly though, the most common subject to come up during these discussions was that of arranged marriage.

A heated conversation with one of my professors, I remember, was one wherein she decidedly told me how she was repulsed by almost everything she read about India- the poverty, the unhygienic and crowded public transport systems, slums, and so much more. Yet she truly desired to fly down to India at least once in her lifetime, to be witness to an Indian marriage ceremony. The concept of the Indian marriage, particularly of an arranged marriage is of immense fascination in the West.

Reading it reminded him of a period in my life, my mids, when we were searching for a groom for me. I am a South Indian who grew up in Mumbai. But of course, I had to track it down. Since its release on July 16, Indian Matchmaking is all my Twitter stream can talk about. In the first episode, Taparia lays out the sociological context of the show for a Western audience: Arranged marriages are the norm in Indian society. A marriage is a union between two families, not just the bride and groom.

Families are heavily involved in the process. Even as matchmakers and families rarely bend on the caste, color, or status of prospective matches, they expect young women to let go of the few things that matter to them. My heart broke as I watched a supposedly progressive matchmaker warn Bansal, an entrepreneur with her own clothing line, that she should be ready to give up her career and relocate if her husband demanded it. In the arranged marriage process, strong independent women are expected to relinquish so much that their identities are reduced to nothing.

I cringed when I heard that.

Japan’s government is going to play Cupid in an attempt to encourage more couples to have babies. The country has one of the lowest birth rates in the world and politicians are turning to novel methods to get people to add to the population. One of these methods is local authorities acting as matchmakers. Japan’s national government will support any local government effort at speed dating, online matchmaking and other ways to coax couples to get together and start families.

The draft recommendations call for intensive efforts over the next five years. The report says Japan faces a “critical situation” in which the dwindling number of children could cause serious social problems for the country.

In mid-July, Netflix dropped the 8-episode series Indian Matchmaking, which follows Mumbai matchmaker Sima Taparia as she travels around.

But while an expert matchmaker like Taparia can spot a perfect pairing a mile way, a face reader can see even more from just one glance at a selfie. Having successfully curated hundreds of marriages, Sima is highly sought after by clients who haven’t had luck in finding love on their own. The show details the culture of Indian arranged marriages and the necessary modernization of the match-making process along the way.

While demystifying the cultural mist that obscures understanding of arranged marriage in western societies, the show also provides a peek into the techniques of a modern Indian matchmaker. Sima relies on her decades of experience to provide strong proposals for her clients, comparing the candidate’s astrological charts, caste, and complexion as part of the process. Believing that all marriages are made in heaven, she sees it as her job to only bring the couple together here on Earth.

Sometimes, however, she needs assistance from her go-to face reader to crack a tough match.

Face reading astrology, technically known as physiognomy, is the practice of predicting personality traits from minute details forming one’s face.

Similar to palm reading, face reading is a staple in some cultures, believed to be a reliable pseudo-science that guides clients to learn more about themselves. Fans of astrology would have some understanding of face reading, as certain characteristics are attributed to astrological signs. When shown a photo of Aparna, a client recognized by her pickiness, Dhurbe said her face represented Jupiter, demonstrating stubborn and domineering qualities.

This is certainly how Aparna comes across in the show’s edit: She’s an accomplished woman who won’t settle for anything below her sky-scraping standards.
