A sound clash is a musical competition where crew members from opposing sound systems pit their skills against each other. Sound clashes take place in a variety of venues, both indoors and outdoors, and primarily feature reggae , dancehall music. The object is to beat or “kill” their competitors. In Jamaica , sound clashes, with their “violently martial ethos”, [1] date back at least to the s, when systems like Tom the Great Sebastian and Duke Reid’s the Trojan clashed in the old Back-O-Wall now Tivoli Gardens neighborhood of Kingston. Sometimes these clashes turned violent, with one system destroying the other system’s equipment. Although sound clashes are perhaps most commonly associated with Jamaica, they also form an integral part of Black British culture in London , with early proponents such as Jah Shaka running sound systems and engaging in sound clashes as early as the s. In the early days of sound clashes, in Jamaican dancehall culture, sound systems would bring their own sound equipment—heavy bass sounds that can be heard miles away are especially important. Sound clashes typically play Jamaican music from up to present recorded singles, and often utilize exclusive dubplates.

The ads often include first and last names of the slaves and their masters, where they lived, ages, and names of the current and previous slaveholder.

They sometimes also include reasons why the slave fled, possible destinations, clothing, special skills or talents, and personality features. Booth is on the southern end of the Windsor-Troy trail, which traverses Cockpit Country so named because it reminded British soldiers of cock-fighting arenas:- hot, sweaty, bloody affairs. This trail was built by British soldiers in the midth century to control the Maroons. The British strategy was to control access to water sources – the Martha Brae River emerges in Windsor , on the north, and Booth Spring, on the south, is also perennial.

The community of Booth was probably established in the post-Emancipation period, but dwindled and died in the ‘s as many members either emigrated to England or moved further away from Cockpit Country into the more-accessible valley of Troy. Booth Spring provides a very nice karst “window” to the Cockpit Country aquifer, where the bottom of a cockpit or, depending upon your view of the world, the ceiling of the subterranean vadose and phreatic components is collapsing.

The geomorphology of this area is text-book cockpit karst, showing how individual sinkholes grow and coalesce to form large closed depressions with multiple points of infiltrations uvalas and large bowl-shaped cockpit depressions. During periods of prolonged, heavy rains, the aquifer rises by as much as 20 meters, flooding the Booth depression. On Friday Holness kicked off a four-day tour of the western Jamaica parish where his party holds four of the five parliamentary seats, as he sought to drum up support for his re-election bid. That appeared to be an acknowledgement that much work will have to be done to rebuild the economy which economists say will be a long haul.

Projections are that it will take up to three years to rebuild the economy from the ravages of the ongoing COVID pandemic. While Holness said just weeks ago that his focus was on rebuilding the economy, rather than elections, analysts have been indicating that the longer he waits to send Jamaicans to the polls, the more likely he could squander the political capital that he has.

However, with COVID cases breaking the 1, mark over the weekend, and with 13 deaths from the virus and two communities currently under quarantine, analysts have been warning that things could quickly get worse if the economic and health crises deepens. It would be only the second time that general elections are held in September, which is the traditional back-to-school month.
